Codex and Code

We look forward to welcoming participants to Patmos for the onsite component of Codex and Code. The information below will help you organise your stay and take part in the programme. Please consult the final programme together with this page before travelling.

Accommodation

Where should I stay?

All participants are required to stay in Skala. The main venue, meeting points, accommodation, restaurants, cafés and everyday facilities are located within a compact area, making Skala the most practical base for the programme.

Participants are responsible for arranging and paying for their own accommodation. Early booking is strongly recommended.

Will I need private transport?

No private transport is required for regular activities in Skala. The principal locations are within approximately 15 minutes’ walking distance. Transfers to the Monastery Library and the organised Friday visits will be arranged by the BIP.

Arrival and the first day

On Monday, 14 September, participants should arrive at the Patmion Cultural Centre at least 15 minutes before the first session. A tote bag containing relevant programme materials will be provided, and further practical information will be given at the beginning of the morning session.

Library of the Holy Monastery of Saint John the Theologian

From Tuesday to Thursday, the morning programme begins at the Patmion Cultural Centre and continues with practical sessions at the Monastery Library. Participants should always check the venue listed for each session in the programme.

Transfers to the Monastery

On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, the BIP will organise transport from Skala to the Library of the Holy Monastery of Saint John the Theologian. The transfer takes place during the scheduled 10:00–10:50 break. Participants should remain with the group and follow instructions concerning the meeting and departure point.

Daily schedule

From Monday to Thursday, the morning programme finishes at approximately 13:00 and the afternoon programme begins at 17:00. The extended midday interval is free time for lunch, rest and independent exploration before the afternoon sessions.

Friday visits and island tour

After Friday’s morning academic sessions, the programme includes visits to the Cave of the Apocalypse, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Archaeological Museum of Patmos, followed by an island tour. Transfer begins at 12:00. The academic programme resumes at the Patmion Cultural Centre at 17:00. Final meeting-point information will be announced during the BIP.

Food and drink

Meals are generally not included. Participants should cover their own food and drink expenses. Skala has numerous tavernas, restaurants, cafés, bakeries, supermarkets and small food shops within easy walking distance.

Welcome Dinner

A Welcome Dinner is scheduled in Skala on Monday at 20:00, immediately after the first day of sessions. The venue and final practical arrangements will be communicated separately.

What should I bring?

• a laptop and charger for digital and hands-on sessions;
• the materials normally used for taking notes;
• comfortable walking shoes;
• a reusable water bottle;
• sun protection;
• a light bag for daily use;
• swimwear, if you wish to use the midday break for swimming.

Any additional technical requirements for particular workshops will be communicated separately.

Attendance and participation

Participants are expected to attend the preparatory online sessions and the scheduled onsite academic activities and to take an active part in practical workshops, manuscript sessions and digital exercises. Active participation and successful completion of the learning portfolio are required for the award of 3 ECTS credits.

Accessibility and Individual Support

Appropriate arrangements are in place to support participants with specific learning needs or mobility requirements. Participants who may require individual adjustments are encouraged to contact the organising team in advance, so that the necessary support can be arranged in a timely and confidential manner.

Certificates

Certificates of Participation will be presented during the closing session on Friday, 18 September, from 19:10 to 20:00 at the Patmion Cultural Centre.

Communication during the BIP

Important announcements, meeting points, transfer arrangements and unavoidable last-minute changes will be communicated directly to participants. Please check regularly the email address used for correspondence concerning the BIP.

Photography

Photographs may be taken during the BIP for documentation and communication purposes, including possible use on the programme website, institutional webpages and social media. Participants who prefer not to appear in photographs should inform the organisers at the beginning of the programme. Every reasonable effort will be made to respect this preference throughout the BIP.
