Where manuscript tradition meets the digital future
Codex and Code is an international Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme organised by the Department of Humanities of Democritus University of Thrace in collaboration with the Historical and Palaeographical Archive of the National Bank of Greece Cultural Foundation, dedicated to the study of Greek written heritage through classical scholarship and digital methods.
Bringing together papyrology, palaeography, codicology, textual criticism and Digital Humanities, the programme combines online preparation with an intensive week of lectures, manuscript-based workshops and hands-on digital training on the island of Patmos.
Against the exceptional background of Patmos and the historic manuscript collections of the Holy Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, participants will explore the Greek book from papyrus and majuscule scripts to Byzantine and post-Byzantine manuscripts, digital scholarly editions, Handwritten Text Recognition, metadata, computational analysis and digital stemmatics.

Learn to read, describe, date and interpret Greek written artefacts through papyrology, palaeography, codicology and textual criticism.
Digital Approaches
Explore HTR, TEI/XML, digital repositories, metadata, manuscript classification, computational dating, stemmatics and emerging AI-assisted methods.
